A MESSAGE FROM JAPANESE YOUTH

IMPACT of FUKUSHIMA DESASTER

Your Environment Summit (私たちの環境サミット)

FUKUSHIMA Daiichi nuclear power plants (NPP) have been damaged severely. “The annual radiation level will exceed 20 millisieverts per year (mSv/yr) in some areas outside the Fukushima Daiichi NPP 30 km zone. On April 22, the Japanese government finally declared Iidate Village, Kawamata Town and Katsurao Village to be part of the "Planned Evacuation Zone," and evacuation was underway by the end of May. Because of the delay in issuing this evacuation order, residents in these areas were unnecessarily exposed to high levels of radiation. In particular, pregnant women, infants and elementary and junior high school children were exposed to a high level of risk.”(Citizens' Nuclear Information center) Even though it has been 8 months from the Fukushima nuclear power plants (NPP) accident, several ten thousand residents cannot return to their hometowns because of the radiation contamination. About 1000 km2 areas are still out of bounds!

People were killed and will be killed by Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident
BECAUSE of the evacuation advisory in Fukushima Daiichi NPP 20km zone, people could not search for the missing persons who were visited by the seismic sea waves. Some people suffering from serious illness died in ambulance cars during transportation to outsice the 20km zone. Many refuges and farmers commit suicide.
Many people have been exposed to radiation. For example, portions of Fukushima City, a major city with a large population (about 300,000), are also highly contaminated. The air dose rate is as high as 1.9 to 3.8 μSv/hr, and the accumulation of cesium-137 is as high as 300,000 to 600,000 bq/m2. Many people will get cancer and be killed owing to the Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident.
The total decontamination cost is not easy to be calculated, but it may be reached to several hundred billion dollars or more.

Millions of people feel serious anxious about the Radiation Exposure
The radiation caused negative effects to the daily life of millions of people. A college student in Fukushima said, “I feel strong anxious to the college life. I wash the clothes every day. When it rains a little, I soon take a shower. Children cannnot play in the ground.” Even in Tokyo, over 200km far from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP, many people, especically those who have little children, are nervous about their food, water and high-level-exposed areas.

Change from Nuclear to Renewables!
“Your Environment Summit” is a group made by college students and young people in Tokyo. According to our questionnaire to 76 persons, over 90% young people answered that the number of NPPs in Japan should be decrease or be zero. Accident in Fukushima proved that NPPs destroy hole human life and environment. NPPs are not reasonable choice to reduce greenhouse gas because the impact of accidents is too big. As IPCC’s “Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources” showed, renewable energy sources have big potentials and little risk for severe accidents. We must choose the safer society for human. We hope NPPs will disappear all over the world.
